Other parents should teach their kids to be accepting and kind to a classmate or even a family member. There is nothing so sad when you see your child be ignored and not included. It’s time to recognize the children who are now adults with autism and who continue to flap, spin, make odd noises, have public meltdowns….. Our children grow larger and become adults with full-size bodies. Some of these things don’t go away. It’s time to acknowledge that autism goes from childhood into adulthood. I’m sorry but my son is 19 years old, and it’s hard for people to remember he’s 19 but he still has all of the same things going on plus more than he did when he was a child.

I have a 4-year-old with severe autism, but is starting to become a little verbal,I just hate it when people tell me oo, so sad or I feel bad for you, that just makes me so mad, in my opinion, that is insulting, I would never trade my situation for no other. So shocked to see the label “Autism Parents!” Please educate all those at Autism Speaks and social media followers on People First Language, as well described in the works and articles by Kathie Snow!! Parents of children who have a diagnosis with an Autism spectrum disorder need to know Autism is not an adjective nor should it define who they are. Just because my grandson is nonverbal doesn’t mean that he cannot communicate with his parents, me or anyone else that wants to take the Autism traveling life’s journey using a different roadmap shirt to get to know him. And it doesn’t mean that he cannot hear you or understand what you are saying. If you have questions please feel free to ask. We would rather you ask us and learn something about a world you would never imagine being a part of rather than staring at our children, speak ill of them behind our backs or make fun of them. They are very loving people and just want the same things as we do.

Instead of judging me; support me. As a mother of a 50-year-old adult with autism, it is difficult. I not only have to deal with his autism; I have to fight to keep his benefits. I also have my issues as a senior. Please don’t judge offer support. I have autism and its true we are not, all the Autism traveling life’s journey using a different roadmap shirt, we all different I’m on high end and I like to go to school I’m working to get my GED and I want to go to college to be an artist because my anger is my art and I can make pretty things so please don’t judge me or makeup I don’t like it very much I’m still human I’m not an alien. Doesn’t bother me at all. People aren’t trying to be disrespectful. I use autistic and with autism interchangeably. We shouldn’t be offended if someone uses a term we don’t prefer because they are not trying to be mean about it.
