The problem I see with this culture is that if you’re reaching for a mind-altering substance every time you’re stressed, you do have a problem even if you’re not getting really intoxicated. I was married to an alcoholic and one of the precipitators of his decline was that he couldn’t handle anything without alcohol. So he drank all the time because having a job is stressful, being a parent is stressful and being married is stressful.
