Here visiting my dad right; my mom, my son Matthew and I are sitting in the cafeteria of the hospital waiting for visiting hours to begin again. This woman walks in and approaches us begging for money for food. I said I’m so sorry I have no cash. She says it’s ok if you have a Veteran In memory of those who believed it was better to die on their feet shirt, can you please buy me just a little bit of food, I’m so hungry, I haven’t eaten all day. Everyone around us is looking at her in disapproval shaking their heads. So I go, ok yes I can get you some food. We go into the cafeteria and she asks if she can get some hot broiled chicken I said yes of course. She asks again politely can I please get mashed potatoes with gravy too? corn and bread too are that too much?

I said no, get whatever you want, she starts getting a bag full of food and two sodas and is smiling from chin to chin, but is also shivering at the same time from walking in the rain. I said, where do you live Glenda? (Found out her name while talking to her) She replied, I slept in a cardboard box last night honey but I live in a Battered Women’s Shelter on the other side of town usually is where I stay. That broke my heart because I used to volunteer for many years at a Battered Woman’s Shelter years ago and knew what it was like for these women because of the stories they shared with me. I hugged her tightly after she thanked me (so many times) and felt that her arms and hands were very cold and her Veteran In memory of those who believed it was better to die on their feet shirt was actually drenched from the rain. I took my sweater off that I was wearing and gave it to her, here take this, she looked shocked.

And as she was pulling it over her head she says oh it’s so warm, she started crying so hard, “thank you thank you thank you may God bless you and your family. I started crying too. It’s so easy to judge people’s path and the decisions they made in life, but we will never understand unless we walk a day in her shoes. I’m sure she suffers more than anyone knows or cares to know. I pray she will make it back to the Shelter somehow because I needed to stay here to see my Dad. I felt sad letting her leave though. This woman reminds me I need to be thankful for everything I have, no matter how little. Glenda doesn’t even have a place to call home or food to eat and she somehow still finds the will to move on and hasn’t given up
