Too many people do this thinking it will be a good thing. It’s not. Puppies and kittens are not holiday gifts or throwaway toys and should never be treated as such. They have no choice who takes them home and if that will be a good fit & they require a lot of care, training, Wooden spoon survivor shirt and attention for their growth and well being as a new baby. If you have a family already with young kids/toddlers – they need to be taught how to treat animals with respect and kindness too – Actually, that should happen first before even thinking of a new addition! Of course, lots of children are great & patient with animals but there are many that mistreat them and then the poor things get blamed or punished for a child’s (sometimes adults) terrible behavior. Which is disgusting when animals are not born bad by nature. If your family is not capable of looking after the pet and treating/caring for it properly then wait till they are mature to understand what that fully entails.

Ok, don’t get angry and start trolling me for this, but I have a question. Not a complaint! Just a question, for German folks. I definitely agree with the heart of this, which is that we don’t want dogs to be adopted, only to be returned because the person they are supposed to belong to isn’t ready for/open to the commitment of caring for them for the rest of their lives. I get that and applaud it. But since it’s only sheltered adoptions that are banned for this, doesn’t that lead more people to shop for purebreds, etc for “surprise gifts” of animals from breeders instead of adopting from shelters?
